southern country biscuits with sawmill gravy
(2 ratings)
This is how my husband and I have started our day for 54 years. Breakfast is our main meal of the day, and we can't function without our hot biscuits and a good cup of coffee. My grandchildren all love to come to our house on the weekends to eat biscuits and gravy.
Blue Ribbon Recipe
Hearty, these Southern country biscuits with sawmill gravy are such a treat. The fluffy buttermilk biscuits are melt-in-your-mouth good. While the biscuits bake, it's easy to whip up the creamy and sausage-filled old-fashioned sawmill gravy. This may not be a breakfast eaten every day, but it's wonderful for a holiday or special occasion.

How To Make southern country biscuits with sawmill gravy
Test Kitchen Tips
If you don't have enough sausage drippings to make the gravy, add a little butter to the pan.
-
1For the biscuits, combine flour, baking powder, and salt.
-
2Cut in shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
-
3Add buttermilk and stir until blended.
-
4Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead 3 times. Pat out to 1/2-inch thickness and cut with a biscuit cutter.
-
5Place on a greased baking sheet. Bake at 450 degrees for 15 minutes or until brown.
-
6For the gravy, brown your sausage in a skillet. Remove the browned sausage leaving the drippings.
-
7Lightly brown the flour in the sausage drippings on medium heat.
-
8Add milk, water, and crumbled sausage. Stir constantly until the desired thickness.
-
9Remove from heat immediately. Add salt and pepper. Serve over hot biscuits.
