In my early 20's, I lived with some southern belles in Alaska! They were crazy for grittes with butter and cheese, but they couldn't find grittes in Alaska - so they would cook up a batch of Cream of Wheat and add butter and cheese. I loved the result and have passed it on to my husband and sons who also love this savory treat whenever they get the munchies. Give it a try and you'll agree; desperation is the true mother of invention!

Ingredients For savory cream of wheat

  • 1/3 c
    cream of wheat
  • 1 2/3 c
    water, boiling
  • 1/2 c
    cheese, shredded
  • 1 Tbsp
    butter
  • salt and pepper to taste

How To Make savory cream of wheat

  • 1
    Using a wire whip, gradually whip cereal into the boiling water. Stir constantly.

    Reduce the heat and allow to boil until thick. Only takes a few minutes.

    Add shredded cheese and butter. Any favorite cheese will do, but I prefer sharp cheddar.
  • The perfect comfort food!

    Serve immediately. Makes two medium size bowls. This recipe multiplies well 3 or 4 times the original.
