Blue Ribbon Recipe

This simple casserole is great if you're having houseguests. It's prepared the night before so you just have to pop it in the oven in the morning. It's delicious and bakes perfectly. For testing purposes, we stuck with the basic recipe, but you could really have some fun with the add-in options. Your crew is going to gobble this up!

Ingredients For breakfast awaits

  • CASSEROLE
  • 1 lb
    breakfast sausage
  • 6 slice
    white bread, toasted and cubed
  • 1 c
    grated cheddar cheese
  • 8 lg
    eggs
  • 2 c
    milk
  • 1 tsp
    dry mustard
  • 1 tsp
    salt
  • 1/2 tsp
    pepper
  • ADD-IN IDEAS
  • other cooked breakfast meats
  • onion
  • bell pepper
  • mushrooms
  • spinach

How To Make breakfast awaits

  • Crumbled sausage in a frying pan.

    Place a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the sausage and any veggies other than spinach (if using) and cook until browned and softened. Drain.
  • Bread arranged in a baking dish with crumbled sausage on top.

    Arrange the bread on the bottom of a well buttered 13x9-inch baking dish. Scatter the meat mixture over the bread. If you are using spinach, add it here.
  • Cheese sprinkled on top of crumbled sausage.

    Sprinkle on the cheese.
  • Dry mustard added to whisked eggs and milk in a bowl.

    Mix the eggs, milk, dry mustard, and salt in a medium bowl.
  • Pouring egg mixture over bread, sausage, and cheese.

    Pour over the bread and meat mixture.
  • Baking dish covered in aluminum foil.

    Seal the baking dish with foil and refrigerate overnight, or at least 8 hours.
  • Covered casserole dish baking in the oven.

    When ready to bake, remove from the refrigerator leaving the foil on and set on the counter for no more then a half hour to allow the pan to get closer to room temperature. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Casserole baking in the oven.

    Bake while covered for 40 minutes.
  • Casserole baking uncovered with melted cheese.

    Uncover and bake for an additional 12-15 minutes until the top is golden. Enjoy!
