Ingredients For sweet breakfast bread

  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 cups packed light brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp. shredded orange peel
  • 1/2 t. salt
  • 1/2 t. ground mace
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 2 t. baking powder
  • 1/2 t. baking soda
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 t. ground cinnamon
  • 1/3 cup chopped walnuts

How To Make sweet breakfast bread

    Combine flour, brown sugar, orange peel, salt and mace in a mixing bowl; cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Measure 1/3 cup and set it aside.

    Add baking powder and soda to remaining crumbs. Combine egg and buttermilk; add to flour mixture, stirring until well mixed. Turn into a greased 9" square baking pan. Add cinnamon and walnuts to reserved crumbs; sprinkle evenly over batter.

    Bake in a 400 oven for 45 to 55 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Makes 9 to 12 servings
