This is an easy bread that most Irish families made fresh every couple of days depending on the size of the family. This recipe was from my Great Grandmother Sullivan who had 15 children!

Ingredients For irish soda bread

3 cflour (sifted 3 times)

1 1/2 tspof each: baking soda and baking powder

1/3 csugar

1 cbuttermilk (can also use sour milk)

1 craisins
How To Make irish soda bread

1Sift the flour, baking soda and powder into a bowl. Add in the sugar and raisins. Stir with a wooden spoon. Add in the buttermilk and form a dough. On a floured surface, knead to dough by folding the dough into itself over and over. Form a round shape and cut a cross shape on the dough to keep the bread from "bursting" during the baking process. Bake the bread for 35-40 minutes at 350°F. *** Serve with Irish butter (or any butter). Eat warm, cold or toasted.

2*** Traditional is with raisins, but you can substitute craisins or dried cherries. Or... omit any fruit.
