One of my dearest friends always makes this at Christmas to give as gifts for her neighbors and friends. Everyone looks forward to this.

Ingredients For date and nut bread

1 1/2 lbs. dates

1 1/2 tsp. baking soda

3/4 cup butter or margarine

3 cups sugar

3 eggs
-
dash salt
-
1 1/2 chopped nuts

1 1/2 tsp. vanilla

3 cups flour
How To Make date and nut bread

1Cut up dates in a bowl, cover with 1 1/2 cups hot water (from the tap) and baking soda. Set aside.

2In another bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add eggs and mix well. Add salt, nuts and vanilla and mix well. Add dates and liquid. Then add flour and mix well.

3Bake in greased and floured loaf pans in 350 degree oven. Bake for 40 to 55 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.

4Cool 20 to 25 minutes. Freezes well.
