southern cornbread
This is plain and simple southern style cornbread! Nope! No sugar in mine. Real southern cornbread doesn’t have sugar in it, in my opinion.

Ingredients For southern cornbread
-
1 1/2 ccornmeal mix (stivers or martha white)
-
1 call purpose flour
-
1/4 cvegetable oil
-
2eggs
-
1 tspvegetable oil
-
1 cbuttermilk or regular sweet milk
How To Make southern cornbread
-
1Preheat oven to 450 At this time you can add the teaspoon of oil into your cast iron pan and stick it in the oven to heat the oil in the pan (about 5 minutes) while you prepare the rest!
-
2I just dump all the ingredients into a large mixing bowl and whisk well.
-
3It may be pretty thick (not pourable). If so, just add some more milk. I’ve added 1/4 cup extra milk to this mixture at times.
-
4Carefully remove your hot pan from the oven and slowly pour in your batter. Bake for 20-25 minutes.
-
5When I removed my baked cornbread I usually slather the top with butter, just letting it soak in! It’ll pull nicely away from the side of the pan. You can serve out of the pan or flip it out onto a serving plate.
-
6No need to use cast iron, but if you do it makes the most wonderful crispy crunchy edges that everyone loves!
-
7You could make muffins with this as well, adjust your bake time. I also fry it up in a shallow pan of hot oil, draining on paper towel’s.
