This is the first thing that I ever learned how to cook. I knew when Daddy went to milk the cows in the evening that it was time to start cooking the cornbread. The recipe came off the back of aunt Jemima's corn meal many years ago.

Ingredients For cornbread

  • 1 c
    plain cornmeal
  • 3 Tbsp
    plain flour
  • 3 tsp
    baking powder
  • 1 tsp
    salt
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1
    egg
  • 2 c
    milk
  • 2 Tbsp
    melted bacon grease

How To Make cornbread

  • 1
    Sift dry ingredients into a mixing bowl.
  • 2
    Add milk and egg; stirring until combined
  • 3
    Heat bacon drippings in a black skillet (that you are going to cook the bread) in a 450 degree oven.

    Add about half the drippings to the batter and stir in.
  • 5
    Pour batter into a very hot black skillet and bake at 450 degrees for 20 minutes or until bread is brown.
