This is a recipe for oven toast that my mother-in- law made for her 5 children when they were small. My husband has very fond memories of having this for breakfast and said that "Mama would use up a whole loaf of bread at one time." However, his sister does not share his sentiment. He recently shared this recipe for a family cookbook. She said, "Thanks, for letting everybody know that we were so poor that we couldn't afford a toaster." I make this now and it's not because I don't own a toaster. LOL

Ingredients For 5 pat toast

  • 6 slice
    bread
  • 6 Tbsp
    margarine or butter

How To Make 5 pat toast

  • 1
    Set broiler on HIGH
  • 2
Cut each tablespoon of margarine into 6 equal pieces. Note: Make 3 vertical slices and then one horizontally in the middle to get 6 pieces) Repeat with each tablespoon of margarine-you should have 30 small pieces.
  • 3
Place one piece of margarine in each corner and one in the middle of each slice of bread. Place on cookie sheet.
  • 4
Put in oven and broil for approximately 2-3 minutes or until margarine/butter is melted and bread is nicely browned. WATCH VERY CLOSELY because this can burn quickly-ovens temperatures can vary. I HIGHLY Recommend checking after one minute and 30 seconds to one minute intervals until done thereafter. Note: Add shredded cheese to make cheese toast or cinnamon/sugar mixture to make cinnamon toast.
