Many years ago, someone in the family collected recipes from descendants of my great grandparents, William M. and Florence E. (Snodgrass) Whaley and had them compiled into a cookbook. I am posting those recipes here so that they will not be lost. This recipe was submitted by my Great Aunt Allene Palmer.

Ingredients For aunt allene's sweet pickles

7 lbcucumbers

1 galwater

1 cpickling lime

2 qtvinegar

8 csugar

2 Tbspsalt

1 tspcelery seed

1 tspwhole cloves

1 tsppickling spice
How To Make aunt allene's sweet pickles

1Wash and slice cucumbers in 1/2-inch chunks.

2Soak 24 hours in 1 gallon of water and 1 cup of pickling lime.

3Rinse well in clear water, then soak for 3 hours in ice water.

4Soak overnight in mixture of vinegar, sugar, salt, celery seed, whole cloves and pickling spice.

5Boil 35 minutes and seal in hot sterilized jars. these are better when served chilled.
