This recipe originates from my sausage bread which I always make for special occasions and give as gifts during the holidays. I realized, and so did my kids, that this is just too good not to have more than a few times a year. So that is how my sausage bread rounds as a delicious anytime appetizer came about.

Stuffed with hearty sausage, cheese, and a hint of garlic, you won't be able to eat just one of these sausage bread rounds. These little balls are packed with flavor. Enjoy as a heartier game day appetizer or a party snack. It's everything you love about sausage bread in a ball of bread. The aroma of these baking will bring everyone into the kitchen.

Ingredients For sausage bread rounds

  • 1 lb
    sweet Italian sausage, removed from casing
  • 1 tsp
    pepper
  • 2 clove
    garlic, chopped
  • 1 Tbsp
    oregano
  • 1/4 c
    + 2 Tbsp Parmesan cheese, divided
  • 1 lg
    egg, divided
  • 1 lb
    loaf frozen bread dough, defrosted according to package directions
  • 1 c
    shredded mozarella cheese
  • 4 tsp
    garlic powder

How To Make sausage bread rounds

  • Preheat oven and spray muffin pans with non-stick spray.

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray one 12-cup and one 6-cup (or 3 six-cup, using 16 cups) muffin/cupcake pans with cooking spray and set aside.
  • Brown sausage until slightly pink.

    In a large skillet, over medium heat, cook sausage almost completely cooked leaving slightly pink. Crumble into pieces with a spatula and drain.
  • Add pepper, chopped garlic, and oregano to the sausage.

    Add to the sausage 1 tsp pepper, 2 chopped garlic cloves, and 1 Tbsp oregano; cook until brown.
  • Take off the heat; add egg yolk and Parmesan cheese.

    Turn off the heat. Add in 2 Tbsp Parmesan cheese and egg yolk; stir completely.
  • Cut bread into quarters and quarter again.

    Cut the bread dough loaf into quarters. Then cut each quarter again in quarters.
  • Stretch ball into a round. Top with Parmesan cheese and sausage mixture.

    Roll each piece into a ball. Then stretch the ball into a round as if making a pizza crust. Sprinkle each round with 1/2 tsp Parmesan cheese. Then spoon on approximately 1 1/2 tsp of the sausage mixture.
  • Top with mozzarella cheese.

    Top each with 1 tsp shredded mozzarella cheese.
  • Bring dough up around the ball and pinch together.

    Bring dough up around the filling and pinch together.
  • Place seam side down in a muffin tin.

    Place seam side down into each cup of prepared pans.
  • Brush with egg wash.

    Brush each round with reserved egg white.
  • Sprinkle with garlic powder and bake until golden brown.

    Sprinkle the top of each with 1/4 tsp garlic powder. Bake for 20-22 minutes until golden brown.
  • Slightly cool and remove from the muffin tin.

    Let cool in the pan for 5 minutes and then remove.
  • Serve with marinara sauce.

    Serve with your favorite marinara sauce for dipping.
