My Dad worked in a pizzeria in the 60's. This is the original sauce recipe, but not the dough. I found this recipe later and liked it better. I have ate this pizza since I was a little girl and this is what I made for all of you. I remember you making your own individual pizzas or calzones-you loved it!

Ingredients For pizza

  • SAUCE:
  • 16 oz
    tomato sauce
  • 1 tsp
    garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp
    oregano, dried
  • 1/2 tsp
    anise seeds
  • 1 tsp
    caraway seeds
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 1/4 tsp
    pepper
  • CRUST:
  • 1/4 c
    water, warm
  • 1 pkg
    instant dry yeast
  • 1 tsp
    sugar
  • 4 c
    flour
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 2 Tbsp
    vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 c
    water, warm

How To Make pizza

  • 1
In a small sauce pan, add all of the sauce ingredients, stir, bring to boil, turn down to simmer and simmer covered for about 15 minutes. Cool. (Before putting the anise and caraway in the pan, rub them in the palm of your hand, this will release the herbs flavor.) You can also grind the herbs in a coffee grinder, if you do not want the whole seeds in your sauce.

In a mixing bowl, add the flour, sugar, salt and dry yeast, mix with a spoon.
  • 3
Add the water and oil, stir with a spoon until most of the flour in incorporated. At this point, you can either knead by hand or put on the dough hook on your mixer and mix- until dough is not sticky on med for about 2 minutes or knead by hand for about 3. If you need more more flour, just add it, a little at a time, but you should probably only need about a tablespoon or two. Cover and let rise in a warm place until double in size.

Divide the dough in half, unless you really want the crust thick. On a greased pizza pan or cookie sheet shape each piece of dough to the thickness you would like. I have also made calzones with this. Put sauce on top, cheese, parmesan cheese, then your favorite toppings. Bake at 400 for about 15 to 20 minutes. If you are making a really thick crust, you might want to consider putting it in a large cast iron skillet (or two) with oil and bake it longer, of course.
