upside-down apple french toast
This is so delicious and has been a hit every time I've made it. It is easy and looks very elegant when served. Great for overnight guests. No syrup is needed for this. The brown sugar, butter, and apples provide all the wonderful flavor and of course, the creme topping doesn't hurt either.
Blue Ribbon Recipe
This upside-down apple French toast is an impressive breakfast casserole for guests. Apples are layered on the bottom of a baking dish with a butter and brown sugar mixture. Then, slices of bread are placed on top, and the custardy egg mixture poured over the slices gets absorbed. As it bakes, the apples become tender and filled with cinnamon and nutmeg. Once baked, the casserole is flipped and the apples are on top. Add a dollop of the creme topping for a rich and decadent breakfast. The apples and sugar mixture makes a lot of syrup while baking. Be careful when flipping the casserole.

How To Make upside-down apple french toast
-
1Combine butter, brown sugar, and water in a saucepan. Heat on medium until bubbling; stirring frequently. Pour this mixture into a 9x13" pan sprayed with non-stick spray. Allow to cool for 20-30 minutes.
-
2Place sliced apples over the brown sugar mixture in the bottom of the pan in rows close together; overlapping is fine.
-
3Sprinkle with cinnamon, nutmeg, and optional raisins.
-
4Place sliced bread on top of apples.
-
5Mix eggs, milk, and vanilla extract.
-
6Pour egg mixture over bread. Make sure the bread is saturated with the mixture. Cover and refrigerate overnight or for at least 3 hours to let the bread absorb the egg mixture.
-
7Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Bake for 1 hour or until golden and crispy on top.
-
8While the casserole is baking, make the topping. Just whip all ingredients on high until thickened. Creme topping is optional but delicious!
-
9Invert onto a platter for serving. If any apples stick you can remove them with a spatula and arrange them on top.
-
10Serve a generous spoonful of topping on top of each serving. Then sprinkle with a few almonds.
