Tart and crisp a citrus dessert just screams summertime to me. I’ll never pass up dessert, especially when they’re packed with citrus flavor. Pucker up, because these Blue Ribbon desserts taste like summer on a plate.
Amy Freeze won the National Pie Championship with her Sittin on a Sandbar Key Lime Pie recipe. After one bite, we saw why. I’ve eaten a lot of key lime pie in my life and this recipe ranks pretty high.
The vanilla wafer crust is a great base for the tangy, sweet, and creamy filling. Cream of coconut adds a subtle flavor and makes it a bit different than other key lime pie fillings. The sweetened whipped cream is perfect on top! After one bite, you’re going to find reasons why you need to make this pie and why it is a National Pie Championship award winner.
“Lemons were on sale,” explains Maggie May Schill (Jacksonville, FL). “So besides mixing them up with kumquats to make my friend some kumquat cake, I also started messing with my recipe for traditional Southern style white cake.”
The result was her delightful Southern Lemon White Cake With Lemon Curd. Dense and moist, the cake’s not overly sweet. The lemon curd helps to balance out the sweetness of the buttercream frosting. It’s fantastic!
Wonderfully tart with a creamy meringue on top, Penny Burdge’s (Shawnee, KS) Lemon Meringue Pie will quickly become a family favorite.
“[This recipe is] originally from my grandmother via my mom,” shares Penny. “I’ve adjusted it through the years to make it tarter because that’s how my family likes it.” Nothing beats a classic recipe and this pie is proof of that.
Kids will love Sylvia Waldsmith’s (Gautier, MS) Orange Whip. “This is a wonderful treat for the kids and a perfect light dessert for the grown-ups,” thinks Sylvia and I agree.
Served in orange halves, this creamy, fruity, cute dessert will be a hit at any gathering! Kids and adults alike will love making – and EATING – this citrus dessert.
“This cake is so refreshing and a crowd pleaser,” says Kathy Harrell (Camden, AR) of her Refreshing Lemon Icebox Cake. “A great cake to take to a gathering. You will surely leave with a clean cake platter. My family loves this cake, especially in the summertime.”
Kathy’s recipe starts with a boxed cake mix which makes it easy peasy to prepare. The punch of lemon flavor comes into the dessert thanks to the fresh lemon juice in the filling and the simple icing. Overall, this cake is sweet, tart, creamy and refreshing.
