Gather the Ingredients
- Refrigerated pie crust
- 8 apples (Granny Smith recommended)
- 1 tsp cornstarch
- 1 Tbsp warm water
- 3 tsp cinnamon, divided
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 3/4 cup sugar, divided
- 1 large egg
- 1 tsp water
- Store bought caramel sauce
To Make Lattice Crust Baked Apples
1. In a small bowl, combine cornstarch and water. Stir until cornstarch is completely dissolved. Set aside. Preheat the oven to 375.
2. Take four of the apples, peel and dice them making sure to remove the core. Place chunks into the bowl with cornstarch/water mixture.
3. Add the apple chunks, cornstarch/water, 1/4 cup sugar and 1 tsp of cinnamon to a saute pan. Cook over medium heat until they begin to soften. Then, reduce the heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat to cool.
4. Take the remaining apples and slice the tops off. Using a melon baller, remove the center of the apple. Make sure not to get too close to the outer skin and leave enough apple so when baked it doesn’t lose its shape.
5. Lay pre-made pie crust on a lightly floured surface. Using a knife or pizza cutter, cut the crust into 1/4″ strips.
6. Place apples into a baking dish. Fill each apple with the filling.
7. Make an egg wash by whisking the egg with 1 tsp water. In a separate bowl, combine 1/2 c sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon, and 1/4 tsp nutmeg.
8. Take pie dough slices and place them on top of the stuffed apples creating a lattice.
9. Brush the pie dough with the egg wash.
10. Sprinkle the cinnamon-nutmeg sugar on top.
11. Place baking dish into the preheated oven. Bake for 30 minutes. It’s finished baking when the crust is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling.
12. Once on a plate, drizzle with caramel sauce. The drizzle is optional but highly recommended.

Test Kitchen Tips
- Be careful when scooping out the apples. If you scoop too much toward the bottom the apple pie filling will leak when baking.
- Large to medium-sized apples work best for this.
- You can substitute a different apple, but we think Granny Smith are best. They are tart and pair well with the sugar in the filling. Plus they’re a little heartier and stand up to the baking. If you do want to substitute, Braeburn, Honeycrisp, or Gala may work.
