What is all this superfood craze anyway? Can superfoods do laundry and take out the trash? Why are they so super? Well, they might not be able to do errands, but they can power your body so you can do so in record time. Most foods with the label of superfoods are incredibly nutrient dense, and some can even help protect your heart!
Here are a few superfoods you should have in your cart.
1. Berries
All berries, but especially blueberries and strawberries. They have high levels of antioxidants and phytochemicals. Studies have shown a lower risk of heart attack with higher consumption of both blueberries and strawberries.
2. Salmon
Regular intake of salmon has been shown to decrease the risk of abnormal heartbeats, reduce triglycerides, and slow the accumulation of fat. The American Heart Association recommends at least two 3.5 ounce servings of fish per week.
3. Kale
The fiber, potassium, Vitamin C, and Vitamin B6 found in kale all support heart health!
4. Green Tea
Green tea drinkers have been found to have a lower risk of death overall and lower risk of cardiovascular disease. A 2013 study found four or more cups per day may cut risk up to 20%. Researchers believe the high amounts of antioxidants may be responsible.
5. Flaxseeds
Flaxseeds are packed with nutrition that benefits your heart. For starters, they are high in anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids which are known to lower risk of cardiovascular diseases. They are also high in lignans (a healthy compound found in plants) and fiber which can help lower cholesterol levels. Just make sure to grind them before consuming them. Flaxseed meal is great to throw in yogurt, smoothies, oatmeal, and other foods. Whole flax seeds will come out the same way they went in, so make sure to grind them first!
6. Legumes
Legumes are packed with fiber and have long been associated with improving health. They are most known for their cholesterol-lowering effect and potential blood sugar regulatory properties.
7. Avocados
Avocados are one of the healthiest fruits you could consume – a superfruit! They are packed with monounsaturated fat which is found in abundance in the famous heart-healthy Mediterranean diet. Avocados are also high in fiber and potassium, both essential for a healthy heart!
8. Nuts
Nuts have become known as superfoods because studies show that most people who consume them regularly are leaner and healthier than those who don’t. Most nuts are high in healthy fats, fiber, and Vitamin E which support heart health.
