During your next grocery haul, make sure to stock up on sugar, flour, and butter… it’s cookie making time! A festive tradition in many households is making Christmas cookies. It’s an activity the family can do together and the rewards are pretty tasty.
I have cookies that I make every year. They are family favorites and I know Santa looks forward to them too. But, this year I wanted to incorporate a few new ones onto my cookie tray. And boy, there are lots of yummy ones to pick from.
“In our family, Christmas cookies are kind of a big deal,” jokes Angela LeMoine (Jackson, NJ). “These Italian Fig Cookies turn out delicious and beautiful.” There are a few steps to these adorable cookies, but nothing very complicated.
The fig filling alone is delicious. It’s sweet from the figs, nutty from the almonds with a hint of apricot flavor. The cookie itself is soft, tender and not overly sweet. So with the filling and glaze, it’s a fantastic flavor combination. Plus, I love that they’re bite-sized. I didn’t feel guilty when I tasted a few… or ten.
LaDale Hymer’s (Cleveland, OK) Peppermint Spritz Cookies are the perfect spritz cookie for Christmas. “I love these buttery cookies and love peppermint so I combine them both,” explains LaDale. “My dad loves these cookies he almost couldn’t stop eating them.”
A touch of peppermint flavor really gives this buttery cookie a holiday flair. The dough is perfect – the cookie really keeps its shape while cooking. Get creative… use different shapes and sizes from your cookie press and colorful sprinkles to add some flair to your cookies.
Rich, buttery, and chewy, Annelise Friedman’s (Las Vegas, NV) Danish Butter Cookies are similar to a sugar cookie but without all the fuss. They remind me of a Christmas cookie but will be good any time of year.
“[This is a] really easy and delicious traditional holiday recipe,” thinks Annelise. “If you can find them, alternate between red and green cherries for Christmastime!” We couldn’t find green cherries, so used only red. They add a special touch, but the cookie is delicious without them too.
If you’re looking for a cookie to decorate, but don’t want a traditional sugar cookie, try Norene Dowell’s (Dundee, MI) Nutmeg Christmas Cookies. “They are soft and a compliment for the milk that goes with them,” shares Norene.
The nutmeg mixed with eggnog is a great flavor combination. We rolled these out a bit thicker and the cookie was moist and chewy. The decorating possibilities are endless!
“My dad is a huge cookie fan and he wanted me to create a cookie that was reminiscent of one of his favorite holiday treats – cherry cordials,” reveals Noelle Myers. “This is what I came up with a Cherry Cordial Cookie and it has turned out to be a VERY popular cookie with family and friends.”
You need these soft sugar cookies on your holiday cookie tray. They have little bits of dried cherries, are topped with a dollop of chocolaty cherry preserves and drizzled with white chocolate. Oh my… they’re good. Chewy, chocolaty, sweet, and fantastic.
