Looking for a holiday activity the entire family can do together? Make a gingerbread house!
Stores do sell kits, but have you seen how much those cost? You can easily make one at home with ingredients you probably have in your pantry or can easily pick up at the market. All you need is royal icing, graham crackers, candy decorations and a bit of creativity.
Let’s get started!
What You’ll Need
- Graham crackers
- Thickened royal icing
- Candy for decorations such as Twizzlers, peppermints, gumdrops, M&M’s, etc
1. Make your royal icing recipe and add extra powdered sugar to thicken it to a paste-like consistency. This is your glue.
2. Put royal icing into a piping bag fitted with a round tip. Place a damp paper towel into a cup to keep tip damp while working.
3. Prepare the graham crackers. Keep some in full sheets and break some into quarters. Using a serrated knife, cut the sides off two crackers to use for the frame of the house.
4. Start to assemble the base by placing two graham crackers together and use the royal icing as glue to hold sides together. Hold for a few seconds.
5. Continue assembling the gingerbread house base.
6. Once four sides are glued together, let dry for a few moments before starting on the roof.
7. Outline the top of the base with royal icing.
8. Add royal icing to one side of a graham cracker to use for the roof.
9. Glue two graham crackers together for a roof.
10. Let the gingerbread house set a few minutes.
11. Use single cookies for shingles and the door.
12. Affix first four shingles for the roof.
13. Place two additional pieces for a total of six shingles.
14. Let royal icing set-up before starting to decorate.
15. Get creative and decorate using assorted candies.
16. Use an M&M as a door knob.
17. Icing mocks snow and icicles.
18. Gumdrops are great around the edges.
19. Let dry.
20.The completed house.
