Growing up, you knew it was going to be a good day if you opened up your lunchbox and found the holy grail of sandwiches inside – the Fluffernutter. You may think, “Isn’t peanut butter and jelly the best lunchbox sandwich ever?” and it is for some people. But if lived in the Northeast, it was all about the Fluffernutter.
October 8th is National Fluffernutter Day, so let’s celebrate this favorite childhood sandwich.
If you’re not familiar with a Fluffernutter, it starts with two pieces of white bread. Can you use wheat or another type bread? Yes, but it’s not the same. Classic white is the way to go.
Sandwiched inbetween the bread is peanut butter and the delicious Marshmallow Fluff. No substitutions here, Marshmallow Fluff, produced by Durkee-Mower, is definitely the preferred brand for Fluffernutter connoisseurs. Made with corn syrup, sugar, dried egg whites and vanilla, the ingredients become a spreadable marshmallow. Make sure to have a few napkins handy… things may get a bit sticky.
